Japan is a region and former country that plays a significant part in the history of the Guilty Gear series. The island nation was destroyed in 2074 by Justice on the very day she declared war on humanity.
The few survivors of this calamity, referred to as the Japanese (ジャパニーズ, Japanīzu?), were all put into protective custody in colonies around the world. Their spirituality display anomalous reactions to supernatural energy,[1] showing a natural affinity for using the ki element.

Story[]
During the 20th century, Japan enjoyed a massive economic boom and became one of the world's leading economic powers, but political unrest in the 21st century led to an economic collapse. It was then that disaster struck.[2]
Presumably on September 2, 2074,[3] a Gear Project facility on the U.S. was testing the command-type Gear, Justice, when the unknown entity from the Dawn of Revival made contact with Justice, tried to give itself life using her, and copied her DNA data. Concurrently,[3] at least 388[3] people in Japan started to mutate, with the victims suddenly bursting in agony, transforming into massive and unrecognizable living bomb creatures.[4] Afraid that in an hour the Earth would no longer be a human world, That Man had his team switch Justice over to manual override and fired a maximum output Gamma Ray at Japan.[3] It hit the area between the Korean peninsula and the Japanese islands, completely obliterating the country in an instant,[2] leading to the "Black Sunrise".[5]
Few Japanese survived the ordeal[6] and were gathered by the United Nations in colonies protected by magical barriers.[7] The general public were made to believe that the Japanese were to be viewed as "national treasures" and special citizens[6] who must be protected.[1] In truth, genetic modification was observed, and the colonies were a form of quarantine. Only a select few individuals were aware of this, with the governments in charge of the colonies steadily supplying a vaccine that would retard the changes.[3]
In October 21, 2187, Ramlethal Valentine hides in the lone island that remained after the country's obliteration and declares war on the entire world per her Mother's orders.[8] After a week there Ramlethal is confronted by several people, until a team made up of her own sister Elphelt, Sol Badguy, Ky Kiske, and his son Sin take her into custody upon the Cradle's activation.[9]
