Interview[]

Per the interviewer's understanding, Ishiwatari likes to watch films; Ishiwatari says that the series, at the time, doesn't have many movie-styled parts, even though he always wanted the game appearance to be linked to a movie. He also recommends watching a Hong Kong film named The Storm Riders. Although the characters have a very specific fashion, Ishiwatari—admiting to having little interest in the clothes themselves, but the people wear them—believes himself to be a weak designer, and adds that the first Guilty Gear was really affected by the manga Bastard!!, which he read while he was a student.

Regarding his image of a perfect man, and what he would like to be, Ishiwatari says he would want to be a chivalrous person like the characters from Kazuhiko Shimamoto's mangas, a type of person he's thought about very much—the kind of people who say that they don't want to be human. (To him, Anji is closest to this character type, although not in fighting style.) As for a woman's "ideal image", he mentions that there many, but that he hasn't got a specific one, saying he loves them all. However, he would like to meet a woman that looks good in jeans.

Regarding spontaneous flashes of inspiration, Ishiwatari says he sometimes has them, but his process is more like slowly straining soup, with him rambling "Maybe this? Or maybe that? A piece of this? Should I insert this here?". This true not only for his art, but for the backstories and his music as well. His approach is: Develop ideas, and you will come up with a result in the end; there is no point in waiting for inspiration. But even relying on this, he is 'ashamed' in that he makes very imperfect things.

Ishiwatari is mainly a music lover that listens to everything, which includes The Beatles, Slayer, death metal, and some Japanese music. He really likes Ringo Sheena. He started liking music because of Queen, and believes they will remain as his favorites for all his life. When he pictures a theme in his head, he thinks "I will like this one", but often changes his mind when listening to the finished track—which is specially true for NAOMI systems. All in all, his favorite Guilty Gear X themes are "Still In The Dark", "Fuuga", "No Mercy", and thinks that Sol's theme has the most effective sound. The 'most important thing' are his music CDs (specially Queen, which shocked him once and continues to impress him now, and Ringo Sheena, which he thinks will affect him on and on), which would be the first things he'd grab in case of a fire.

More philosophically, Ishiwatari answers that he believes in himself, and what is inside his own head, when asked "what do you believe in?". And lastly, if he had three wishes: he'd make himself a talented guitar player, make himself smart—saying he is very slow when it comes to making decisions when in trouble, so he'd like his thoughts to be much faster—, and to have more musicians on his team.
