Mankind knew that they cannot change society. So instead of reflecting on themselves, they blamed the Beasts.

Guilty Gear -Strive- is the seventh mainline installment and overall is the twenty-fifth release in the Guilty Gear series, and is intended to be a beginner-friendly "complete reconstruction" of the franchise.
Announced at Evo 2018, the game was released worldwide for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Steam on June 2021, whereas the arcade version was released a month later and distributed via Sega's ALL.Net P-ras MULTI Version 3.[2] It was later released in Xbox One, Series X|S, and Windows in March 2023.[3]
Design[]
Guilty Gear -Strive- features three main modes: Offline Mode, which encompasses the following options: 1-Player (Arcade, Versus and Survival Modes), 2-Player, Dojo (Tutorial, Mission and Training Modes) and, since Ver1.13, a Combo sub-menu; Network Mode (Online Match, Ranking, and Quick Start), and Story Mode (Play Story and GG World). Other main menu options include Profile, Collection (which encompasses Replay, Gallery, Fishing, and since Ver1.16, Digital Figure Mode), Settings, Store, and Title. A number of achievements can be earned by the player as well.
The game retains the traditional five-button layout but adds Dash, although it still allows players to dash with the traditional input. In terms of mechanics, Tension and Negative Penalty, Faultless Defense, Throws ( + ) and Throw Breaks, Instant Block, Overdrive Attacks, revised Roman Cancels ( + + ), Psych Bursts (any attack button + ), the R.I.S.C. Gauge, Taunts and Respects remain mostly the same. However, Throws will miss out of range like any other attack, instead of doing a normal attack as before. The Gatling system has also been changed: weak attacks no longer universally cancel into heavy attacks; rather, they combo into Command Normals or Special Attacks.
It drops the Xrd-only mechanics Blitz Shield/Attack and Danger Time mechanics, as well as the recurring Dead Angle Attack and Instant Kills. In terms of status effects, only crouching or ground Throws can cause a hard Knockdown—otherwise, characters immediately roll and recover—, and Stagger now causes a gauge to appear above the affected character and can be escaped from sooner if the player times their button press correctly.
A new mechanic is the Wall-Break: When a character is in a corner and takes damage, they may get stuck to the wall; as they slowly slide down, they may openly be attacked, and each attack on the stuck character will damage the wall, cracking it. By continuing the offense, the wall may be broken, causing a stage transition, ending the combo, and giving the attacker a temporary Positive Bonus. Other new mechanics added were Wild Assault and Deflect Shield.
Story[]
Summary[]
Three weeks after the Universal Will incident, the story begins when I-No breaks into Illyria Castle's prison to extract the mysterious Happy Chaos from former St. Maximus Ariels. Meanwhile, having surrendered to the U.S. government, That Man—or rather, Asuka R. Kreutz—requests to participate in the upcoming G4 Summit from within a safe room, intending to erase from the world the Tome of Origin and Sol Badguy. President Vernon and his staff agree to his involvement, while asking the other nations to help with security.
After a successful bounty run alongside Jack-O' Valentine, Sol heeds Ky Kiske's summons. Ky informs him about I-No's break-in and the US request that Sol participate in G4 as a knight; however, Sol decides to go on a vacation with Jack-O' to Iseo. As they reach L'oro Di Illyria, Axl Low warns that something bad will happen. Soon enough, Chaos releases Nagoriyuki (who reluctantly obeys Chaos) by destroying the building above. Axl saves the people inside, and I-No follows him. Privately, she dares Axl to erase her, but Axl simply asks I-No to stop working with Chaos before leaving. I-No then lets herself be captured by Illyrian soldiers.
Suspicious of her, Sol notices Chaos' convertible and decides to pursue him. With Chipp Zanuff and Anji Mito joining in the chase, Chaos uses Nagoriyuki to escape from them all, but not before introducing himself to Sol. Rattled by the encounter, Sol barges in Ky's interrogation of I-No, but she reveals nothing. Privately, Jack-O' tells Sol and Ky of I-No's origins, and her being incomplete. Sol immediately departs for G4 to keep Asuka's Tome safe, while Ky and Jack-O' remain behind to further interrogate I-No. After the summit starts, I-No tells Jack-O' of her memories of "Will", and wonders if Jack-O' has a place for herself in the world. Ky then correctly surmises that there will trouble at G4 and, with Jack-O', departs aboard his airship.
The summit is derailed when Chaos brainwashes all the guards inside the White House and takes the dignitaries hostage, only for Vernon—the only one who can access Asuka's room—to be rescued by Sol. Together, they evade guards before contacting Zepp, and thanks to them, the Pentagon and Illyria Castle, but before they can escape, Chaos activates the White House's aircraft mode. Meanwhile, Asuka determines that Chaos is his former teacher, as well as I-No's missing half, and helps Sol from inside his room. Daryl, for his part, manages to convince Chaos to release them. At the Pentagon, Chipp and Anji warn that everyone is on a time limit, for the White House is likely to be shot down when it reaches Old Mexico, and the only survivor might be none other than Chaos.
Thanks to Potemkin, Giovanna, and Nagoriyuki (who resists Chaos' control), Sol and Vernon make it to Asuka's safe room, which doubles as a escape pod, and Asuka deceives Chaos into entering before it is ejected. The allied forces thus gain control of the White House, ending the crisis. After Ky and Jack-O' arrive, Asuka announces that he will use the White House to travel to a lunar colony to safeguard the Tome, but not before giving Sol the fight he wanted, which ends in Sol letting Asuka remove the Flame of Corruption from him. In the conversations after, Chaos' subterfuge is revealed: He disguised himself as a guard and used a body double. Revealing the real Tome to be fused with Asuka, Chaos uses it to restore I-No's godhood at his own expense. I-No easily defeats everyone and uses the Tome to start a process that will force humanity's evolution, likely destroying the current world. Ky and Axl try to stop I-No, but Jack-O' intervenes, intending to sacrifice herself to turn I-No human. Sol convinces her not to do it and instead, while Ky and Axl distract I-No, uses the Outrage to hit I-No's weak point, as revealed by Nagoriyuki. In her last moments, I-No finally understands who Axl is to her.
In the aftermath, a state funeral is arranged for "Sol Badguy" the hero, creating an urban legend; Axl reunites with Megumi, who is I-No's last-second legacy; and Frederick and Jack-O' set up a home in Iseo, where he starts building a rocket to visit Asuka on the moon. Elsewhere, Chaos is revealed to still be around.
The Another Story downloadable episode takes place after Chaos' hostages are released. Special Brigade Commander Ramlethal Valentine receives an emergency report from the outskirts of Illyria, and departs alongside Sin Kiske, now a knight of Illyria. They encounter a young girl, Delilah, whose power is going out of control while attempting to use it to track and kill Happy Chaos. After finding a concerned Baiken, they contemplate Delilah's incapacitation and Bedman's weaponized bed attacks them until Sin convinces that they want to help Delilah. It contains her power while the heroes retreat to the May Ship II to meet up with Faust, May and April, and device a plan to save Delilah and the city below.

Development[]
Announced to be in development at Evo 2018 by Arc System Works CEO Minoru Kidooka,[4] the core concept of Strive was neither evolution nor returning to roots, but rather a "complete reconstruction of the franchise". The goal was to create a game that both new and existing players alike would want to get their hands on, undertaking a "full-frontal confrontation with the essence of the fighting game genre" and "high risk move".[5] The aim was to make it so that entry is simple, and were not trying to cut the depth of the game.[6] Unlike Xrd, which was about continuing what they had started with the original games, the game design and art for Strive was a process of trial and error until the very end, trying to find the best compromise.[7]
At TGS 2019, general director Daisuke Ishiwatari and director Akira Katano stated that, as a new title, no parts of previous entries were re-appropriated, and that not all characters from Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 would return.[6] Hoping to fully take advantage of 3D[8] and freely move the camera for dynamic angles, Team Red had to re-think how the models were created in contrast to Xrd models, which were designed to look good only from certain angles. Additionally, the team got many new members, due to those with the know-how of the "anime look" technique moving to Granblue Fantasy Versus and Dragon Ball FighterZ.[9] To make the visuals happen through any means, the team sometimes even used analog rather than digital, to get the look they wanted.[10]
On November 3, 2019, an English dub option was announced on an ArcLive stream.[11] Two days later, the song "Smell of the Game" was released for promotion.[12] While rollback netcode was chosen as the game's online connection method early in planning, it took a lot of time and effort to get it working,[10] and was not available during the Closed Beta Test, which took place in April 16—19, 2020.[13][14] On May 15, 2020, producer Takashi Yamanaka made an official statement: due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the release date was pushed back into early 2021 to ensure its quality.[15] As an aside, the Developer's Backyard blog was created on June 1, 2020.[16]
On October 11, 2020, a new release date for Strive (April 9, 2021, with early access on April 6) and the contents of the Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate editions were announced, along with what "Season Pass 1" entailed. The Ultimate Edition adds a digital soundtrack and artworks, color #12, and a PlayStation 4 dynamic custom theme.[17] Due to player feedback from the first Open Beta Test on February 17—23, 2021 (which only featured Versus, Tutorial, Training and Network Modes),[18] Arc System Works made the decision to further delay the game to adjust certain aspects, pushing the release to June 11, 2021, and the Deluxe and Ultimate editions to June 8.[19] Due to the pandemic, the arcade version was also delayed without a set release date.[20] A second Open Beta Test was held around May 13—16, 2021.[21] On June 6, 2021, the post-launch roadmap was shown, including upcoming features via free updates.[22]
Upon release, the game was well-received and earned a number of awards, including Best Fighting Game at The Game Awards 2021.[23] Game updates of note include Ver1.09, which saw characters re-balanced to some degree;[24] Ver1.10, changing universal mechanics and characters, and adding the Tournament feature for PlayStation 4 players;[25] Ver1.11, which added the Room Customization feature;[26] Ver1.13, with Combo Maker mode;[27] Ver1.16, with Digital Figure Mode;[28] and Ver1.17, with the addition of an extra story scenario.[29][30]
On May 25, 2022, an Ultimate Edition 2022[31] and the Japan-exclusive physical re-release Starter Edition 2022 were announced for PlayStation consoles; the latter includes the base game and all Season Pass 1 content. Also announced were a large-scale balance update,[32] which occurred in Ver1.18,[33] and a beta test for cross-platform play between PlayStation consoles and PC sometime in the fall.[34] During Evo 2022, "Season Pass 2" launched on August 8.[35] The next major announcement was the game's release via Game Pass on Xbox One, Series X|S, and Windows alongside BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle during Tokyo Game Show 2022.[31] The cross-platform open beta test took place on October 13—17, 2023.[36]
A new online mode, Team of 3, was revealed on December 8, 2023, scheduled for 2024.[37] Game updates of note during Season 2 included: Ver1.22, adding the Tournament feature for PlayStation 5 players;[38] Ver1.24, which added cross-platform features between PlayStation consoles and Steam, and re-balanced mechanics and characters;[39] and Ver1.26, with further balance adjustments.[40]
During Evo 2023 came the announcement of Season 3 along with two new mechanics Wild Assault and Deflect Shield,[41] and a Daredevil Edition to replace the Starter and Ultimate Editions 2022; it includes the base game, Ultimate Edition contents, Season Passes 1-3, and the anniversary color pack.[42][43] The new mechanics were implemented in Ver1.29 along with other major changes regarding its interface, battle types, and major balance changes.[44] Further adjustments occured in Ver1.33.[45] Another physical re-release was the GG 25th Anniversary Box collection, scheduled for March 29, 2023,[46] but which was delayed to April 26[47] and then to May 7.[48] After the Season 4 roadmap showcase on July 21,[49] another rebalance update in Ver1.38,[50] and the replacement of Daredevil Edition by the Blazing Edition (which includes Season Pass 4),[51] the open beta for Team of 3 Mode ran from July 25—29, 2024.[52]

Trivia[]
- The official logo highlights the IV in -Strive-, and holds the meaning of four, being the fourth main series game (after 1, 2 and 3). Up until now, X, XX and Xrd all contained the letter X, so they decided to go with "STRIVE" to separate this title from those games.[54]
- It is the third entry to feature an English voice cast since Guilty Gear 2 -Overture- and Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign-. This time, the English voice actors are fully credited.
- Since the Ver1.05 patch, it is also the third game in the series to have a Korean dub, after Guilty Gear X Plus and Guilty Gear XX ♯Reload.
- Unlike previous games in the series where vocal themes were limited to Raven and to Sol's "Ride the Fire!", every character in the roster has a vocal theme.
- Themes from the Xrd series were recycled into this title, those being: "Give me a Break" (character select), "Sky Should Be High" (versus screen), "Sign" (battle intro cutscene), and "Determination" (victory screen).
- Footage of the game can be briefly seen in episode two of the anime Onimai. The main protagonist, Mahiro Oyama, appears to be in a match between Bridget and Sol.
- Guilty Gear -Strive- is the first game in both of the series and original first-party IP to feature third-party guest characters, common to other fighting game franchises, in this case introducing Lucyna Kushinada from the Cyberpunk 2077 anime adaptation Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
- It is the second Arc System Works-developed fighting game to feature guest characters since Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising (their first guest fighter was 2B from Nier: Automata).
- The game so far has been part of collaborations with: #COMPASS,[55] Counter:Side,[56] Tales of the Rays,[57][58] Crusaders Quest,[59] Epic Seven,[60] Tower Records,[61][62] D4DJ Groovy Mix,[63] Elemental Story,[64] Bar from scratch,[65] Destiny Child,[66] 0101,[67][68] and Soulworker.[69]
