51 seconds... Ah, that's a good number, love that number.
― Goldlewis Dickinson[src]

Goldlewis Dickinson is a playable character who makes his debut in Guilty Gear -Strive-. The current Secretary of Defense of the United States of America as well as a soldier in active duty, Goldlewis is the right hand of president Vernon and formerly of Erica Bartholomew.

Design[]

Goldlewis has light blond hair arranged in a quiff and a thick beard. Though he wears a pair of glasses with the left side blacked out with a lipstick mark, silver bolts and small text on it, both of his blue eyes are functional.

He is a large, wide-set man. His outfit consists of a brown military-style jacket laden with badges on the arms and rolled-up sleeves, over a pale light-brown shirt with stars on the collar, a deer skull necklace, and a yellow tie. He wears brown cowboy-style chaps, grey trousers below them, as well as thick boots. His brown, fingerless gloves have horseshoes on the back of the hand.

Personality[]

A reliable man whose presence is a pillar of support to the security and authority of his country,[1] Goldlewis' sincere and good-natured traits have earned the trust of both Vernon and Erica,[5] who know him to be both loyal and funny.[4] To him, protecting his country also means protecting the ideals and people his president believes in.[6] Seemingly a punctual and exacting man, expecting the same from his subordinates, as well as quite fearsome when irritated,[6] Goldlewis is also well-known for his excellent judgment and ability to lead, based on his extensive combat experience, which has garnered him immense popularity.[1]

Although his hobby is searching for and collecting unidentified organisms,[3] Goldlewis doesn't believe in aliens[5] or ghosts,[3] insisting that the coffin he carries around contains a cryptid, even as the entity's features point to it being an extraterrestrial.[5]

Story[]

Background[]

Little is known about his past. Born after his older brother,[3] Goldlewis' career took on a different path. During the Crusades,[note 2] he joined the military[1] to fight the Gear menace and met Vernon E. Groubitz, becoming close friends with him.[5]

Unlike Vernon, however, Goldlewis remained in the service after the war ended, and would become the first active-duty soldier to serve as the Secretary of Defense in U.S. history,[1] taking the position during the presidency of Erica Bartholomew. Also becoming friends with her,[4] he has become a "mainstay of the nation"[1] remaining in his post[6] after Vernon took over from Erica.[8]

Thought the details are unknown, at some point he became estranged from his family due to hiding his "true feelings" from them, believing it was for the best.[9]

Guilty Gear -Strive-[]

In December 2187, That Man—or rather, Asuka R. Kreutz—surrenders himself to the U.S. government,[10] and is welcomed by Vernon into the White House. Irritated by his presence, Goldlewis reinforces security and has his men carry out a training exercise.[6] Afterwards, he reunites with Vernon, Erica and the Chairman to discuss Asuka's intentions (to get rid of Sol Badguy and the Tome of Origin, and his staying at the White House's PEOC) and the incident involving I-No, but Vernon resolves to move forward. Privately, Goldlewis asks Erica how Sol might be convinced to surrender willingly, but she already has it covered.[11]

As the G4 Summit commences, Goldlewis and Erica are to oversee security from the Pentagon, and he beckons his people to be on high alert until every ambassador is safely back home.[12] Yet, despite their precautions, Happy Chaos takes the representatives hostage and even launches U.S. missiles against Illyria; although they self-destruct (thanks to Vernon), the Chairman gives an emergency order to enter the White House and confirm the president's safety. Goldlewis himself goes, but he and his men find heavy resistance from his own agents.[2] Ordering a retreat, he returns to the Pentagon and learns about the situation inside—Chaos needing Vernon to obtain Asuka's Tome, but Sol keeping him safe—thanks to Gabriel. Goldlewis arranges to pick Vernon up, and almost manages to do so, but Chaos activates Tír na nÓg, taking to the skies with Sol and Vernon still inside.[13]

Back at the Pentagon, Goldlewis and company coordinate with Leo Whitefang and his PWAB aides, Millia and Zato. Privately, Goldlewis, Erica and the Chairman contemplate whether to shoot the White House down, yet soon after, they learn that Chaos released the hostages. Trying to ascertain his motives, Chipp Zanuff sneaks in, and reveals that Chaos is immortal. Sol, Vernon and Asuka thus decide to use the PEOC as a escape pod.[14] Although Asuka seemingly manages to trap Chaos there and expel him, and the Royal Fleet One with Ky Kiske arrives,[15] Chaos' deception works and he gets ahold of Asuka's Tome, thus returning I-No's power to her.[16]

Bearing witness to I-No's ascension to godhood just like the rest of the world, Goldlewis is ultimately relieved when Sol, Ky, and other surprise interventions defeat her. In the aftermath, he enjoys a burger in Erica's company, and reflects upon their hero's funeral, to be held later that evening.[16]

Abilities[]

Having extensive combat experience, Goldlewis's personal combat prowess is said to be equivalent to the entire White House Security Force,[1] with Udo remarking that he is stronger than all their agents combined.[6] Goldlewis also sports near supernatural strength and precision, able to grab a HEAT warhead mid-flight.[2]

Regarding his equipment, the black lens on his glasses serves as a laser-aiming module for a satellite particle beam. His main weapon, however, is the large Area 51 coffin he carries around, which contains a mysterious life-form[3] who seems to be extraterrestrial. The entity is capable of providing various items that far surpass the current technological level, and is forced to obey every order and demand from Goldlewis as it seems he has grasped some sort of weakness from it.[5] Seemingly having an indeterminate form, it can shapeshift an arm for attacking in conjunction with Goldlewis or for materializing a spiked mine with helicopter blades, and a gatling gun. Through the coffin, he can also produce a blue energy field that may protect him and others from bullets.[2]

In gameplay, Goldlewis is a power fighter whose attacks deal heavy damage, especially those from his low-trajectory jumps. The effectiveness of his moves changes (except Behemoth Typhoon) depends on the state of his unique meter, the Security Level, which has three grades. The gauge builds from Level 1 to Level 2 quickly but takes longer to get to Level 3, meaning it is worthwhile for Goldlewis to space out his specials for greater effectiveness.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike most characters, Goldlewis is generally referred to by his family name in the story, even by his friends Vernon and Erica.
  • Goldlewis is the second character with known musical tastes—he likes Miles Davis—, with the other being Sol, who likes Queen.
  • Prior to the release of Strive, there were some fan theories speculating that Goldlewis was in fact the Sheriff from the Neo New York stage. It was later revealed via the Developer's Backyard that Goldlewis and the sheriff are brothers.
  • Due to his disbelief of aliens, Goldlewis believes the creature in his coffin to a cryptid, or UMA. He also gives the same classification to Eddie and Faust in his intros against them. He seems to believe in doppelgangers, however.
