Chimaki is a mysterious and silent character in the Guilty Gear series who, according to Daisuke Ishiwatari, serves as the franchise's mascot.
In Guilty Gear 2 -Overture-'s Replay Mode, players can run around the field controlling him. Chimaki received his own spin-off game in Pro Jumper! Guilty Gear Tangent!?, and appears in multiplayer lobbies in Guilty Gear Xrd -Revelator- to give advice to players.
Design[]
Chimaki's body has the shape of a white star, pitch black eyes, a topknot, and a small green leaf between his leg- Sporting a moustache and smoking a cigarette, Chimaki can be confused for a stuffed toy.
Personality[]
It is said that Chimaki does not actually think, at least in any way humans understand. He is not entirely aware of what those around him do, or, for that matter, what he himself does. Anything said to him goes in one ear and out the other... if he has ears. Supposedly he has the same emotional capacity as a human being, which may be why he seems to show affection for small animals to the point of following them around and documenting their routines.
He has an excellent aesthetic sense, is gentle, easily moved to tears, and sensitive to bullying. He is also a man of few words, but when he is moved emotionally, those words become fewer still. When a particular item is put into play, his intelligence and cleverness increase exponentially.
Story[]
Chimaki was born in a conservative island nation known as Japon, which strongly favored remaining neutral and isolated on the world stage. Times changed, however, and foreign culture made its way to the shores of his country. Extremists who despised these changes chose to resist violently.
In this time of chaos, the government realized the only way to stop these extremists was through the use of force, and created an anti-terrorist unit, the C1000. At the forefront of its inception was Chimaki. Although the C1000 patriots struggled to execute their authority, they managed to bring a new era to their island home. No longer in need of their services, President Meiji ordered the dismantling of the C1000.
As a result, the Chimaki is unemployed, overcome with boredom, and has generally abandoned thinking at all. It is in this state that he became Sin Kiske's precious stuffed toy prior to Guilty Gear 2 -Overture-.
Abilities[]
It is said that Chimaki's skill with the sword is completely unprecedented. In Pro Jumper! Guilty Gear Tangent!?, his primary attack consists of slapping a towel on his opponents.
Trivia[]
- Chimaki was originally spotted in an "important magazine". Initially he was called Mononofu, but due to "overwhelming (?)" player demand, he was renamed to Chimaki.
- In the BlazBlue Radio segments in which Ishiwatari appears as Sol, Chimaki is seen hanging on the side of the omake Sol's head, as if being worn as a hair ornament; similar to Litchi Faye-Ling's Lao Jiu.
- In Guilty Gear -Strive-, May carries a Chimaki-themed backpack.
- His appearance somewhat ressembles Big Nose from the Pink Panther franchise, but more oriental.
- His backstory is a loosely disguised allusion to Japan's real world history, specifically the Bakumatsu or late Edo Period; Japon is the "occidental" or the most well known European names for Japan, which natively is known as Nippon; the C1000 is a hanakotoba or wordplay for the Shinsengumi, the Shogun's elite military police squad (the English letter C can be pronounced as "shi", while a thousand is pronounced sen, and formalizing the term with the identifier gumi to make it known as a group roughly has it roll off the tongue as "shisengumi"); President Meiji is a loose moniker for Emperor Meiji (within Japanese media, the Emperor is considered highly revered to where depictions are extremely rare and is considered taboo to make the Emperor an earthly and flawed entity, so making him president is technically not "true", and hence is entirely fiction and passable).
- Chimaki is a Japanese dish where rice mixed with various savory or sweet ingredients is wrapped into a large vegetable or fruit leaf and steamed, where it is then eaten when ready. Originating in China, the dish has origins in being made to repel and drive away evil spirits, making it a rather magical food. It can be implied that as Chimaki is depicted as "naked", he is out of his wrapping, which acts as his clothes.
- His blood type stating being extremely rich in isothiocyanate rather indicates he is a living and breathing vegetable; Isothiocyanates are nutritional compounds said to be crucial in anti-cancer immunity, and is prolific in vegetables such as broccoli, bok choy, cabbage, cauliflower, Japanese daicon, and wasabi.
