Battle types (バトルタイプ, Batoru Taipu?) are a system of classification used in Guilty Gear -Strive-, dividing its playable characters into seven categories according to their general playstyle.
Overview[]
Characters in fighting games tend to fall under different archetypes, or ways to categorize their general playstyle, based on their best moves. Intended to help players new to the series, this is coupled with an easy to use (使いやすさ, Tsukaiyasusa?, lit. Ease of Use) rating to give players an idea of the characters' accessibility; the more stars they have, the easier to pick up the character is. The maximum is five, from most difficult (★☆☆☆☆) to easiest (★★★★★).
Originally the types were Balance, Rushdown, High Speed, Long Range, Power Grappler, Shooting, One Shot, Unique, and Technical,[1] but this was later reduced from nine to seven. With the re-categorization, some characters changed groups. The current battle types are as follows:[2]
- Balance ▰ - Their moves are easy to use. If a player is debating who to play, it is recommended to give them a try.
- Rushdown ▰ - These characters overwhelm the opponent with fast-paced, continuous offense at close range. It includes characters originally classified as High Speed.
- Zoning ▰ - Initially called Long Range. Their long-range attacks makes these characters good at fighting from a distance. Players are to use their strong pokes to handle whatever an opponent throws at them.
- Power ▰ - Previously referred to as Power Grappler. Characters of this kind rush opponents before they have the chance to fight back by using high-damaging moves.
- Unique ▰ - This type of character may take some getting used to, but in the proper hands they can launch an unparalleled offense. It expanded to include characters originally typed as Technical.
- One Shot ▰ - Each of their moves are strong, but players are to carefully wait for a gap in the opponent's offense that will create an opportunity to land a fatal blow.
- Shooting ▰ - They can throw out powerful projectiles. Their strong pressure keeps the opponent locked down.
