Battle styles (戦闘スタイル, Sentō Sutairu?)[1] are a gameplay feature found in Guilty Gear X and all versions of Guilty Gear XX, which allows players to select variants of characters for use in matches. Related to this are characters' special colors.

Overview[]

Through this feature, characters' playstyles may change in significant ways. It can be summarised into two major styles: Character (キャラクタ, Kyarakuta?), which changes movesets between Normal and EX command lists, and GGG Mode (ギルティギア ジェネレーションズ モード, Giruti Gia Jenerēshonzu Mōdo?),[1] which emulates battle mechanics from previous games.

First appearing in the console release of Guilty Gear X, players are allowed to select a GG Mode (GGモード, GG Mōdo?) version of characters, which (...).[2] To set the style, players must hold down R2 while selecting the character; of note is that, in Guilty Gear X Plus, selecting Ky in this fashion results in playing as Robo-Ky.[3] The update also introduces EX Mode (EXモード, EX Mōdo?), which changes character moves and can be selected by pressing L2 + R2.

In Guilty Gear XX, both EX[4] and GG Mode return, with similar unlocking requisites. The Reload update introduces GGX Mode (GGXモード, GGX Mōdo?), which (...).

In Λ Core updates, a menu for battle styles is introduced, which can be accessed by pressing START while selecting characters; one can then switch between Character and Mode with the directional pad Left or Right. The first menu has two options, Normal and EX, while the latter one gives three—AC Mode (ΛCモード, AC Mōdo?), GG Mode, GGX Mode—, with the tags showing above and below a character's icon. It allows to select two styles at once, e.g. one may play as GG EX Sol if they so wish.

Details[]

Guilty Gear X[]

In Guilty Gear X, GG Mode can be unlocked by completing Arcade Mode with Testament or Dizzy (no round losses), or by reaching LV100 in Survival Mode. Two other methods are added in X Plus: obtaining 16 story illustrations, or clearing 7 challenges. The update also removes the no round loss requirement from Arcade Mode.

Guilty Gear XX[]

Unlocking GG Mode and, in Reload, GGX Mode requires that the player reaches ? hours of playing time, clears 45 and 65 missions, reaches Survival Mode LV300 and LV480, respectively, or sees all character endings except Justice's.
